Mercy Corps Welcomes Computer Donations at TCG Electronics Recycling Event

- Technology Conservation Group keeps old devices out of landfills

- Computers and monitors will support Mercy Corps’ Computer Reuse Programs

WHAT:

Trying to keep pace with the latest advancements in technology? Filling the garage with outdated peripherals?

Portland-based Technology Conservation Group will hold a one-day “Electronics Take Back” event on Saturday, September 29 th from 10am-4pm in northwest Portland. The event will benefit Mercy Corps’ Computer Reuse program – connecting Portlanders’ old machines with developing communities around the world.

Mercy Corps will receive donations of computers and monitors that meet their Computer Reuse program standards (Pentium 3 and newer systems in good working condition). Donations to Mercy Corps are tax-deductible.

WHO:

Technology Conservation Group (TCG) is an electronics recycling company that ensures their technology recycling is environmentally responsible and prevents pollution. Old electronics can present an environmental hazard if they are not disposed of properly. Currently more than 3.2 million tons of electronic waste ends up in landfills each year. TCG works to safely manage the potentially hazardous components of electronics and supports the recovery and reuse of valuable materials.

Mercy Corps’ Computer Reuse Project provides computers to communities around the world. Information Technology has immense potential as a social and economic development tool, but many communities in the developing world do not have sufficient access. Meanwhile, millions of useable computers are discarded when old systems are upgraded.

Mercy Corps' Material Aid Department is working to bridge the gap between a desperate need for technology abroad and an overabundance of used computer systems at home. In the last five years Mercy Corps have sent hundreds of computer systems to places like El Salvador, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mongolia and Lebanon.

In El Salvador, for example, Mercy Corps' Material Aid Department sent refurbished computer systems to the Association for Human Development (ADHU), a local nonprofit organization. ADHU used the computer systems to create community computer labs in several rural schools, helping several primary school qualify for state high school certification.

In March 2007 Steve Craig joined Technology Conservation Group as the EH&S Manager. Calling Palm Harbor, FL. Home, Steve is married with two children.

After 13 years in public safety as a paramedic/firefighter, Steve worked as an EH&S engineer for 6 years. With experience in auditing and managing ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 compliance, Mr. Craig will handle vendor auditing and facility compliance for TCG.
