The holiday season has come and gone bringing updated electronics to many American families. Along with the happiness that these new gifts provide, they also create waste with the outdated electronics that have been replaced. While many will try to resell their old gadgets, some are no longer usable and must be disposed of. USA Today reported in December that seventeen states have banned the disposal of electronics in landfills, with laws taking effect through 2013. Rep. John Sarbanes is attempting to resurrect a failed measure from 2010 to fund the promotion of electronics recycling with $60 million dollars over the next 3 years, the Electronic Device Recycling Research and Development Act. The bill failed in the Senate last year when sponsored by then-Rep. Bart Gordon from Tennessee. Last year, President Barack Obama created a taskforce to make recommendations on federal e-waste disposal. Just last week, two House Democrats re-introduced a proposal to stop exportation of electronic waste containing hazardous material. Attention from our nation’s capital may one day lead to a nationwide ban on hazardous e-waste exporting and mandatory recycling of electronics.
